TO SHINE…OR NOT TO SHINE…?
Shines are a vital and exciting element within Salsa. When we first start salsamost of us have to get used to the whole ‘partner’ idea, which atfirst seems to be a strange ‘invasion of space’; After a while, weget so ‘comfortable’ with simply holding hands and tying and untyingknots, that the thought of letting go and ‘shining’ on our own becomesquite confronting. We
don’t know what to do with our feet or our bodies, and the shapings and ‘moods’ ofsome steps may be a little unfamiliar at first. However shines are really liberating!It allows the leader and follower equal possession and enjoyment of the song,without breaking the ‘partnership’ bond. To avoid them is missing out on half the experience of salsa. Shines
should not overtake the dance, but it is an exciting break in patterns to watchand is great fun to do. What are workshops? These are usually one off or a very short series of specialised classes aimed at certain levels. These can range from differents styles of dance to just working on salsa stylising.
