Rebeccas Profile
Rebecca was initially introduced
to Salsa in 2001 during her 4 year stay in Tokyo, immediately
falling in love with both the music and dance. She
received formal training from the internationally recognised
performers and instructors Alberto Romay (Cuba), Mika Takenaga
(Japan) and Mitsue Kikuta (Japan).
She recently placed 2nd in the Salsa Performers category in the South Island Salsa Competition 2008.
She immersed herself in the world of Latin Music by working
at Salsa Sudada, one of Tokyo’s most popular Salsa
venues. This experience gave her the opportunity
to dance with people from Cuba, L.A, New York, Puerto Rico,
The Dominican Republic, Peru, Columbia and Japan, giving
her a first hand appreciation of the different styles of
Salsa music and dancing, and the chance to view Salsa not
just as a dance, but as a way of life and a means of expression.
Upon
returning to Dunedin in 2003 she was part of the initial
force behind the establishment of Salsa in Dunedin, co-founding
and teaching at Salsazon School of Salsa with Alfonso Rios
until mid 2005. Further teaching experience
has included teaching short courses in Salsa through the
University of Otago Clubs and Societies, Ladies Styling
in Dunedin, and most recently, being a guest tutor at the
University of Otago School of Dance. Rebecca’s
enthusiasm and enjoyment of Salsa have made her a popular
social partner on dance floors throughout NZ and Sydney.
Rebecca’s classes have been described as informative,
lively and well structured. Her aim when teaching
Ladies Styling is to provide the tools, techniques and
confidence to allow ladies to find their own unique style.
Her main influences in Ladies Styling have been Josie Neglia
(L.A), Susana Montero (U.K, Spain), Burju (Boston) and
Edie the Salsa Freak (L.A). She has been fortunate
to have taken classes with all of these instructors.
Other international instructors that Rebecca has learnt
from include:
Oliver and Luda (Australia), Jaime and Liz (Australia),
Graeme Haney (Australia), Nestor Manuelian (Australia),
Vivio and Greydis (Cuba), U-Tribe (France), Al (Liquid
Silver) Espinoza and Karla (L.A), Pablo and Diana (Spain),
Johnny Vasquez (Mexico), Super Mario (London), Verity Griffiths
(Australia/NZ), Ryoko and Ryu (Japan), Spin (Korea), Joel
and Betsy (Peru), Gino Mayute (Peru/NZ), and Victor and
Burju (Boston).
